Introduction
Who won't like to read a cartoon book or cartoon film. It fresh the mood and treated as a great entertaining art.
Cartoon is also an art which is made on paper. It includes a great meaning also .It can say a lot of things through a picture which may not be said verbally. So in one word it may be humorous,statical or opinionated drawing or may be jokes. It is used in a newspaper or magazine or even on public wall also. Text may be included or may not be.
Meaning of cartoon
The word cartoon came from the Italian word cartoni. It means pasteboard and the word cartoon means a preparatory sketch in painting. From 14th century in Italy various type of sketches were made on stout paper and were known as Cartoni.
The meaning of the word"Cartoon" changed in 1840. From then in was also used as various design also and also contained with in a box shaped outline and thus formed like all modern cartoons.

Depending the purpose and use of cartoons it may classified in different categories like

- Gag cartoons
- Comic strips
- Illustrative cartoons
- Animated cartoons.
Editorial Cartoons
Editorial cartoons may be called as political cartoon. It is done to give a visual message on current events. It is also made to express a comment or some meaning in a newspaper or magazine. It is presented with some fun but with some inner meaning. So it plays a significant role for public opinion.
Gag Cartoons
It is caption type and used on some board or panel. It appears once and means a massage with some funny picture. It is also used on various magazines and also on greeting cards.
Comic Strips and magazines
It is used in a systematic sequence to tell a serial story. It may be on some imaginary characters or events. Text is also used with in balloons in that panel so that it means that those characters are saying the dialogues. It is also called comic books like Chacha Choudhury or Batman or spider man.
Illustrative Cartoons
This type of cartoons are used in such advertising method to give a illustration or to display some learning materials. It displays some important points on some topics or educational matter. This is most used method to aware people about some social activities.
Animated Cartoons
It is used mainly in visual on various programs. It is famous now in TV for children like a film . It contains some adventure stories. It is famous in television to give some advertisements. It is too much developed with motion pictures.
So it may be called a great art to create inspiration and awareness with some text. It is done in different style and in different styles to get a great attention on some current events or on some significant issues. This is famous now to various political parties also. It is also used in newspapers and magazines to illustrate a character . Various companies are using this art to point out the main features of that company. It may include editorial matters and also educational texts. It is so called a industry as many people are involved with this art.
How to create
Previously it was done with the help of pencil and paper. Sometimes chalks were also used with some colours. This system is also present now but the use of computer changed its style. The cartoonists are using computer by drawing their thought on video screen and publishing electronically. Digital pads also can be used . It is a experimental job also. So print media and visual media changed its definition.
First animated cartoon
Cartoonists started their experiment and work to create animated cartoons in motion from the middle of 19th and 20th century. It is said that Emile Cohl of France is the first creator of animated film and the American Cartoonist Winsor McCay made the first animation of cartoon.

- Joshef Barbara- Tweety and Sylvester.

In India Chacha choudhury, Handa and Bhonda Chota Bhim, are some fomos creations. Some famous Indian cartoonists are Narayan Devnath, Manjula Padmanabhan, Dasari Subhramanyam , Ankul Bagati, samit basu etc.
The modern comic strip on magazines was very popular first in United States. Gag cartoon was very popular in New York first. daily strip cartoon was published first in United States in 1904. Now it is famous in every countries of the world.
Comic books became popular during the early 20th century. Now it is very popular with some original stories and coming in market serially.
Popular consumer: Children are said to be most popular customer of cartoons, but all aged people like to see and they also become children. Government uses as a social awareness program. Various manufacturing companies use cartoons to promote their new products as it is the most popular visual program in any where.
Now many educational learning materials are available in market to give lesson to students and the programs are made through cartoon motion. It is very attractive to kids specially. They can learn their lessons quickly through visual media.
Industry and career: It is so called a industry as many people are involved in creation of this art. Economically ,a lot of wealth with manpower are invested. Many students are taking seriously it to make a successful career in future. Now film industry is also making many animated films and becoming very much popular. O My Ganesha, Tarzan are some popular example.
Keep in mind
Children see and love to see the cartoon serial and film. As it is a quick moving visual, it may affect to the eyes. So continuously looking on screen is not good. The children read and see the cartoon books and serials from heart and this may effect a child mentally and physiologically.
It is a good entertainment art and makes fun ,and also can present a serious matter in a funny way.
