Food as a source of energy

Every person needs to do work. The capacity of doing work is called energy. The energy comes from the food we eat.

 

Different types of food

We take different types of food energy day. Different kinds of foods have different needs to serve. Some types of food provide energy, some provide vitamins and proteins and some provide minerals us. Wheat, rice, maize, Jowar, bajra, barely are called cereals. They provide us energy. Other sources of energy giving food are- sugar, potato, fats, butter, ghee etc.

Fish, meat, eggs, milk, pulse, nuts, and soybeans are rich in proteins.

We require them for the growth of the body.

The foods which help the body to prevent the diseases should be rich in vitamins and minerals. These foods are called protective foods. Examples of protective foods are banana, orange, guava, carrot, cucumber, lady’s finger, spinach, tomato, fruits, green vegetables, milk etc.

Milk is a complete food. It helps us grow and gives energy. Water is also necessary as it helps to clean kidneys and to purify the blood.

 

Complete diet

A complete diet should contain all types of food. It should contain fibrous food, leafy vegetables and meat.

 

Cooking of food

Some foods are eaten row. Some foods are cooked before eating. Cooking makes the food tasty, easy to digest. It also makes food free from harmful germs. But overcooking loses proteins and vitamins. Vitamins contents of pulses can be increased by sprouting. Sprouting is a process by which seeds swell up and germinate by absorbing water. We can cause sprouting in black gram, wheat, maize, masoor, pulse, etc. these should be eaten without salt.

Cleaning of food

Raw fruits and vegetables should be washed in clean running water before eating. The vegetables should be washed before cutting them. The fruits and vegetables should be washed before peeling them off.

All the food items should be properly covered to protect them from dust, flies etc. we should clean our hands before handling any food item.
