Panchayats in villages are made for the justice for villagers. But many times these khap Panchayats gives decisions which are not accepted by our law. Recent case in Jharkhand. The Khap Panchayat ORDERED the rape of a 14-year-old girl because his brother misbehaved with a village girl.
In West Bengal's Birbhum district, a 20-year-old woman was gangraped by 13 men on the orders of the village panchayat.
Should Indian Govt. ban these Panchayats.?

Khap panchayats are in a few states in India ,mostly in Northern India. They are quasi-judicial bodies that pronounce harsh punishments based on age-old customs and traditions, often bordering on regressive measures to modern problems.
They should have been banned but for the political indifference and Vote bank politics, they are still surviving in India.

All have freedom to form associations or organize in any way. Hnce khap panchayats in villages are not unlawful. They are however not competent to give any verdicts that could be lawfully enforced. However if the verdict is acceptd by th concerned parties, all is okay. Also if any verdict is against law of land, law enforcement agncies must take due action. Thus a verdict to kill or rape needs intervention of law enforcement agency who must intervene and take criminal action against the Khap panchayat members who gave such verdict and also those who executed the khap panchayat verdict.

How can any group of people who act as law abider or act as a body who render justice use rape as a punishment that too for one who hasn't committed a crime. It should be banned..without any further delay.

In villages member of Panchayats are elected by the villagers itself like other elections. But the problem is most of the elected persons are uneducated or less educated. They win the election using the money and men power. It is wrong that in many cases the Khap Panchayats act as court and give their own type of punishments to innocents. This is illegal and government should take care of it.

The leading members of panchayats can be punished for giving such unlawful award. But Panchayats as such cannot be banned.

I understand that a Panchayat is legal body or a system which is still prevalent in villages..but how can a heinous crime like rape be a form of justice. Definitely, such system should be abolished.
