Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrim centers. The history of the area dates back to 3rd century B.C. It is believed that King Ashoka donated handsomely towards its up gradation. This once prosperous city is frequented by tourists at all points of the year. he city hosts the Annual Buddha Festival (on Buddha Purnima), as well as the festivals of Navratri Mela (Palta Devi), and Shiva Ratri Mela.
