Yet to Watch?: Friends, this is one of best KamalHassan movie and not only that, this is a turning point for his film carrier.This is more or less like "Godfather" type and this is film based on the life of a don.This is all time hit and this movie is also listed in Times top 100 movies.

About the movie:
This is also a true story and it based upon the life of Varadarajan Mudaliar, who was the underworld don in Mumbai.In this film Kamal Hassan plays the character of Sakthivelu Nayakar.When he was a small child in Tamil Nadu he was used by the Police to find the whereabouts of his father who was doing illegal business.
As a result of this Police surrounds his father and also shoots him in front of Sakthivelu Nayakar.Nayakar couldn't tolerate this and and after finishing his father's funeral he kills the person who was responsible for his father's death and after that he has no one else in Tamil Nadu so he leaves for Mumbai after killing the person who killed his father.
When he reached Mumbai in fear of being caught, there he has no one to take care of him and he was also starving as he had no food.Fortunately a Fisherman family takes him to their house and they also gives food and shelter for him.The place where he was staying with the fisherman is a slum area called as "Dharvi".Majority of population in this place are from Tamil Nadu and they set up Leather Tanning industry.
Unfortunately the person who takes care of Sakthivelu Nayakar at present is also a smuggler.In one incident a police officer Inspector Kelkar arrests his foster-father, who was involved in smuggling goods,and he also tortures him and later killed him.Kamal for the second time in his life decided to take a revenge and he finds the police officer and kills him.After this incident all the people in the Slum considers him as God father because the police officer often created problem for the people in the slum.
So he is seen as a saviour by the people.Later he decided to take care of the smuggling job that his foster-father carried and he also flourishes in this smuggling job and he was also helped by Janagaraj.He also meets Saranya in an extremely embarrassing situation and he also decides to marry her.
As he begins to develop in the smuggling job, he also faces tough competition and as a result of this the people agaist him kills his wife.So Kamal fears about his children's life and he sends them to Chennai so that it would be safe for them.But his son wants to help Kamal and he also tries to kill the witness an this process he looses his life.
As a result of this his daughter hates him and also breaks the relationship with his father after the death of his brother.But the situation becomes very bad for Kamal as he was been constantly monitored by Nasser, who was the Son-in-law of Kamal and also the newly appointed Assistant Police Commissioner .He also finds evidence against Kamal and finally he arrests him.
But unfortunately the case failed in cout due to weak evidence and he was released form the Jail and his people ar eagerly waiing for him.It was at this point one of the famous dialogue in Tamil film industry ,i.e "neenga nalavara Kettavara?"(Are you a good man or bad man", was asked to Kamak by his grandson.
After he was released from the jail he was shot dead.This time the murderer was none other than Inspector Kelkar's son and the reason why he kills him is to take revenge for his father's death.This also naturally becomes the moral of the story...."Don't involve in violence as you will become the victim of violence itself"

Yet to watch?:This is one of the pleasant movie I have ever and the movie is so natural and it is also practical.If you are going to watch for the first time, Iam sure you will like Sham's character,"Marudhu".Eventhouh it is a triangular love story we can view in a different way and we can also understand the feeling of the hero, when he leaves the country.Mainly the film is based on Dostoyevsky's "White Nights".
Theme: This doesn't contain any message but still the concept of love is said in a a different way."Emotions vs Practical life" may be considered as the theme to an extent, and this can be understood in the climax when the girl selects her lover.

About the movie:
Many scenes from this film which has an old light house submerged in sea and many other scenes, are supposed to be taken in Andaman and Nicobar Island.
The films starts with a ship coming to Rameswaram and in that Sham(Marudhu) comes as the member of the ship.When the Ship comes Nancy(Kutty Radhika) eagerly awaits as if she was expecting for someone.Sham comes to India after a long time as he was continuously sailing in ship and when he landed he just kisses the beach,i.e the sand.After he goes into the town and enjoys for a while.At one point of time Nancy comes to Marudhu and asks for help with Marudhu and she reveals that she was in love with Arun Vijay who was a ship captain and visited the city some years back.
Marudhu also helps her but he also loves her and at one point of time she propose to her while he was helping to where is Arun Vijay.Nancy gets angry and she scolds him.She decided not to speak to Marudhu and when she got the news that a ship has come to Sri Lanka and she believes that Arun Vijay will be in that ship and she decides to take a boat to Sri Lanka and during this time Marudhu also joins her in the boat.
The ship stops in the middle of the ocean as there was no fuel and when there was an argument between them the ring in the hands of Nancy ,which was presented by Arun Vijay, slips and falls into ocean.She cries and says that it was really important.So Marudu dives into the ocean and tries to take that ring but he was drowned.Fortunately a boat comes that side and they rescue Marudhu and takes him to the shore, but Marudhu was still unconscious.But later he was rescued and he opens his finger Nancy finds the ring.
At this time, Marudhu says that till that time the ring was a remembrance of Arun Vijay but hereafter the ring symbolises his love towards Nancy.After that a ship comes to the city and Nancy finds a friend of Arun Vijay in that ship and she was shocked to hear that the ship in which Arun Vijay travelled met with and accident and the probability that Arun Vijay is alive is very very less.
Later one Marudhu was to leave the city and he compels Nancy to take a decision.But she didn't accept it as she still believes that Arun vijay loves here.He takes her to Church and writes his name and captains name and asked her to take one paper in the name of God as she couldn't make a decision on her own.She takes one paper and this was kept in a box and given to Pasupati,who was the Father of the church.
Marudhu says that she has got time till he leave to say her love or he will find by opening the decision box.However at last she takes a decision and dint want to open and see what was in the decision paper, and he accepted to marry Marudhu and so Marudhu decided not to leave the city.
All these happened on Christmas and everybody was enjoying it(In film this was the "Alaye alaye..." song.When the song finishes Marudhu finds that some other person was kissing Nancy and everybody around here was surprised and shocked to see Arun Vijay, as he was one in a billion to survive the ship accident.The image below is a scene form the Alaye Alaye song.After seeing this Nancy was very happy and they both were dancing and seeing this Marudhu was shocked and he leaves that place before anyone notice him.The film ends as Sham Leaves the city and he throws down a decision box which contains the Nancy's decision into the ocean.
