There are some misconceptions that float around regarding group discussions...These are related to an actual group discussion conducted as per the manner. You may have to face this types of group discussions when you are attending an interview or likewise.

The Subject given is very tough

This thought is totally wrong.GD is conducted not only to test your general knowledge of current affairs, but also to judge your managerial skills.Topics are always open-ended so that there are more than one view about the same. The fact that two or three topics are given to the candidates to choose from, itself suggests that aim is not to burden the candidates with an unfamiliar topic .Therefore subjects are given so that the candidate can have a fair debate on the issue.

Only one person can be selected out of the group

GD is not a process to select the most suitable candidate. On the contrary , it is a process by which the most unsuitable candidates are elliminated. It is not necessary that in a group of say eight candidates, seven will be elliminated and only one will be selected. There may be, and there are usually more than one candidate having the requisite traits.Actually, all the candidates in the group are ranked in the order of their merit. In other words, what it means is that even if you miss the bull's eye,you still get marks if you are able to hit the circle nearest to it.

Everyone will get  a chance to speak

It is not necessary that each and every candidate will get a chance to speak. If you are unable to speak , you will be at mercy of evaluator. In any case, you will lose some points. You will have to grab or create your opportunities to get a chance.if you interrupt any one unskillfully, you are likely to lose marks.

While you are speaking, others will listen to you

Its not at all necessary. The others may interrupt you.they may refuse whatever you say. They may criticise you.they may mock you.they may even be grossly unfair to you. There is no need to be panic.Be steady throughout the discussion.Present your points with confidence.
