Why does my VLC player not play mp4 files? The video files jhave .mkv extension

I have some video files with .mkv extension. These files play on VLC player on another laptop but not on my desktop computer. I have a Windows 8.1 system. So please help me play these files!

there may few files of VLC software in your system may not transfered or downloarded properly or you need to update some software for the better compatibility of the format of song you tried to paly
