Cooking is regarded as the trademark of ladies. All say, ladies are the real exponents of cooking. Yet, if we see, world famous chefs, all are males. Why so??
I feel, though ladies are cooking experts, they prefer to do in kitchen only. Mostly males cook at restaurants because it needs a lot of manual efforts and speed to cook for more people, than at home. Obviously men cook at restaurants and hotels as they are physically more fit. Thus experts turned chefs!!!
Actually women has made the men lazy so they do not want to cook at home even if they can do it better than their women folk. But in out of home especially when it becomes their profession they simply use their expertise in the field and become top chefs. Women perhaps make as good as their male counterparts but in India, women prefers to work from home. In India women consider it an inferior job so very few take it a s profession but consider it as another job like bearer, dish washer or cleaner in a hotel industry.

You quoted a right point. Earlier chefs too, was not considered as a job of dignity. Now they are appearing in tv ads as well as reality shows and thus got a celebrity status. Things are changing.
My hubby often asks me to start a catering business. But I decline it every time saying, I studied MCA and MBA to start catering?? Perhaps it's the mind set of all educated ladies.

Cooking is n art. Anyone who master this art can be good cooks. And as you said, when it comes to large scale cooking male chefs have an edge over a female chef because of their respective physical structure. Even when it comes to celebrity women chefs who can forget late Tarla Dalal, the renowned chef and cuisine Book writer and Anjum Anand,Madhur Jaffrey to name a few
Just look at our own mythology, the kings ‘Nala’ and ‘ Bheema’ (of Pandava fame) were renowned for their culinary skills. Even today, if a delicacy tickles your taste buds, they compare with a complement, ‘Nala Pakam’ and ‘Bheema Pakam’

Yes. During Pandavs exile (vana vaasam), Bheema has joined the court of king Virat as a chef and won the acclaim of the king for his culinary acumen.

It is not that women cannot take up the challenge of cooking for large number of people, that they are already doing, cooking for large families etc. The reason women have been lagging behind in the catering industry is not due to lack of talents but because such careers require very long and odd working hours, men can easily work such hours but women cannot, because they are required to take complete responsibilities of home and children at the same time, looking after elders in the house, catering to their needs, bearing and rearing children, their illnesses, studies etc. I know some women who started out as chefs but had to change their specialisation after marriage owing o these reasons!
It only goes to show that distribution of work in family is just traditional. Husband goes out for work whereas wife cooks food and does other household work. Men and women can interchange their work. Also when a wife goes to her parents' home temorarily or is sick, the husband temporarily does the work of cooking and sweeping floor.
I have a great female chef in my home. She is not only a chef, but also a homemaker, my mom!! I don't agree with the statement that most chefs are male. Males will no longer be noticed if females come out their kitchen.

It is because men cook better, secondly men are not allowed to try their hands and be experimental with cooking at their home so they fulfill this by becoming chefs. Jokes apart women are more involved with other household chores in addition to looking after their kids, perhaps this is the reason we have more men chefs...
