What percentage of Indian population travel by train everyday?

Indian Railways is one of the biggest transportation network of the country. Keeping in mind the facts - Indian population and cheapest transportation mode in India, if we roughly calculate, what percentage of Indian population will get on to train everyday????? It will include job purposes and educational purposes apart from personal. Will it reach roughly 20%?

Twenty percent traveling daily is big figure. Only MST holders travel daily. The job seekers travel for interview but not daily. The figure would ot be more than five percent.

Only those seeking employment go for iterviews and that too not daily. Just see what percentage of total passengers are these job seekers. Then they also don't travel daily. 20 % is obviously a big figure. Just roughly count the total passengers and the interview seeking youngmen in any train and you will get an idea.

Sandhya Rani I roughly calculated so with a simple logic assuming that 50% of Indian population go out for job/studies. If so, why can't we assume 20% to use trains everyday? - Sandhya Rani - 10 years ago

I don't think 20% is the correct figure although 20% itself is a huge figure. You should refer the Indian railway site may they have pt the statistics on the site.

I think the total number of passengers on trains is 23 million (2.3) crore everyday. If you consider 15 million out of 23 are daily passengers, that will put the figure at a little over 1.25% Indians travel everyday by trains. Travel by other transport not included.

You must check out the website of Indian railways, I am sure they must be publishing such statistics regularly. For common people like us who are not associated with railways and since we do not know much about conditions in other states, it is difficult to estimate the data as a total!

I think now with the advent of Metro in several cities and fast trains like Train 18 many more people will come into railway fold. It must add a couple of percentage, but most of them should be travelling by road itself.

I think in some cities where they have local trains they are used by majority of people. In addition they are widely used for traveling within the country as well.

Exact percentage cannot be said. But, the percentage of travelers can be obtained from the website of Indian Railways.
